WJLA-TV, ABC-7 in Washington, DC, 8/25/11:

Amtrak is canceling train service for Friday, Saturday and Sunday south of Washington in preparation for Hurricane Irene.

Amtrak stated that more cancellations may be necessary.

Trains operating south of Washington canceled in anticipation of hurricane

As Hurricane Irene continues to progress, Amtrak is canceling train service for Friday, Saturday and Sunday operating south of Washington. Additional cancellations may be necessary in the coming days as the major storm moves north. Currently, service on the Northeast Corridor is not affected.

The following cancellations have been made for origination dates of Friday, Aug. 26, Saturday, Aug. 27 and Sunday, Aug. 28:

-Auto Train Trains 52 and 53 (Sanford, Fla. - Lorton, Va.)
-Silver Star Trains 91 and 92 (New York -Tampa - Miami), canceled New York to Jacksonville; train will operate between Jacksonville and Miami
-Silver Meteor Trains 97 and 98 (New York - Miami)
-Palmetto Train 89 (New York - Savannah)

The following cancellations have been made for origination dates of Saturday, Aug. 27 and Sunday, Aug. 28:

-Carolinian Trains 79 and 80 (New York - Cary, N.C.)
-Palmetto Train 90 (New York - Savannah)

Evening update includes added cancellation of two Friday Northeast Regionals south of Washington. The door is left open for trains north of Washington to be affected at some time.

As Hurricane Irene continues to progress, Amtrak has canceled most train service operating south of Washington for this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Additional announcements will be made in the coming days as the major storm moves north.

Most trains on the Northeast Corridor are not yet affected. In addition, other Amtrak services in North Carolina and in Virginia are currently operating as scheduled.

The following cancellations have been made for the origination date of Friday, Aug. 26:

Northeast Regional Trains 67 and 83 (Boston – Newport News) will terminate in Washington.

The following cancellations have been made for origination dates of Friday, Aug. 26, Saturday, Aug. 27, and Sunday, Aug. 28:

Auto Train Trains 52 and 53 (Sanford, Fla. - Lorton, Va.)
Palmetto Trains 89 and 90 (New York - Savannah)

AMTRAK CANCELS MORE EAST COAST TRAINS IN ADVANCE OF HURRICANE IRENE



Service reductions on Saturday, no service on Sunday

As Hurricane Irene continues to advance, Amtrak is canceling more East Coast trains with service reductions beginning on Saturday, Aug. 27, and no trains operating in the Northeast on Sunday, Aug. 28.

The cancellations include service for the Northeast Corridor (Washington – Boston), the Keystone Corridor (New York – Harrisburg, Pa.), the Springfield Line (New Haven, Conn. – Springfield, Mass.), the Empire Service (New York – Albany), the Vermonter (St. Albans, Vt. – Washington), the Northeast Regional services in Virginia and several long-distance trains.

Amtrak is preparing for service recovery following the hurricane by deploying crews, equipment and materials to strategic locations to quickly assess damages, clear debris and make necessary repairs to trains, tracks, and other infrastructure. The Amtrak Police Department is working with FEMA and adding officers to support operational needs.

Amtrak will continue to monitor the hurricane as it progresses and issue service updates as necessary. Passengers are encouraged to call 800-USA-RAIL or visit http://www.Amtrak.com/ for schedule information and train status updates.

Update: Amtrak Crews Working To Restore Service
Most Northeast Regional service resumes between Washington and Philadelphia; all service between Boston and Philadelphia canceled

7:45 p.m. EDT

Amtrak will operate most Northeast Regional trains between Philadelphia and Washington starting on Monday, Aug. 29. All Amtrak service between Boston and Philadelphia is canceled due to the extensive flooding, debris on tracks, and power issues as a result of Hurricane Irene. In addition, all Acela Express service between Boston and Washington is canceled.

Amtrak crews continue to inspect and make repairs to the infrastructure along the Northeast Corridor.

As of 7 p.m., the following trains with origination dates of Monday, Aug. 29 will operate:

* Most Northeast Regional trains between Washington and Philadelphia
* Northeast Regional train 171 will operate Philadelphia to Lynchburg
* Maple Leaf (Washington - Toronto) will operate between Toronto and Niagara Falls only
* Capitol Limited Train 29 and 30 (Chicago – Washington)
* Piedmont Trains 73, 74, 75, 76 (Charlotte – Raleigh)
* Carolinian Trains 79 and 80 will operate between Charlotte and Raleigh only
* Silver Star Trains 91 and 92 will operate between Jacksonville and Miami only

Midday Monday update:

Additional Amtrak service restored


Keystone Service between Philadelphia and Harrisburg restored at 3 p.m.; some Northeast Regional service to operate to Richmond

10:45 a.m. EDT

Amtrak Keystone Service will resume on Monday, Aug. 29 with Train 647 (3:45 p.m. departure from Philadelphia) and Train 652 (3:20 departure from Harrisburg). In addition, Northeast Regional Train 95 (noon departure from Philadelphia) and Train 83 (3:30 p.m. departure from Philadelphia) will operate from Philadelphia to Richmond.

Amtrak crews continue to inspect and make repairs to the infrastructure along the Northeast Corridor.

The rest of the above alert is the same as the one above with the exception of what is now being restored.

Amtrak just Tweeted that they will be restoring Acela service between Boston & DC starting tomorrow morning. Metro North has managed to restore their New Haven division as of 4PM. They are running a Sunday schedule, but that has as much to do with lack of riders as it does the damage.

Acela is resuming between Boston and New York only. Still no word on service through to Washington.

More Amtrak Service Restored on Tuesday, Aug. 30
Full Acela Express service between New York and Boston, Full Downeaster Service between Portland and Boston, Full Keystone Service between Philadelphia and Harrisburg only


August 29, 2011
6:30 p.m. EDT

Amtrak service between New York City and Boston is planned to operate on Tuesday, Aug. 30, including all Acela Express trains and most Northeast Regional service. Also in New England, Amtrak Downeaster service will operate normally between Boston and Portland, Maine, in the aftermath of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene.

Most Northeast Regional service will operate south of Philadelphia, but no Acela Express, Northeast Regional or other Amtrak trains can operate north of Philadelphia to New York.

As of early this Monday evening, about a half-mile of Amtrak right-of-way remained submerged near Trenton, N.J. As the water levels recede, Amtrak engineering forces will make repairs to the track and signal control infrastructure. Updates will continue to be provided and an estimate for restoration of full service south of New York is not yet available.

Therefore, full Amtrak Keystone Service and will operate only between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Penn. on Tuesday, Aug. 30, while the Pennsylvanian (Trains 42 & 43) will operate only between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia on that date.

Other service changes on Tuesday, Aug. 30, include:

* Maple Leaf (Trains 63 & 64) will operate between Toronto and Niagara Falls only, with no Empire Service trains on the Niagara Falls/Buffalo-Albany-New York route.
* Adirondack (Trains 68 & 69) will operate between Montreal and Albany/Rensselaer only, while Vermonter (Trains 55 & 56), Ethan Allen Express (Trains 290 & 291) and Shuttle service trains between New Haven, Conn., and Springfield, Mass., are canceled due to track closures and utility outages in New York and Connecticut.
* Full Northeast Regional service to Lynchburg, Va., and limited Northeast Regional service to Richmond will operate, with no service between Richmond and Newport News, Va.
* Cardinal (Train 50) will not operate east of Indianapolis to Washington and New York.
* Full Piedmont service (Trains 73-76) will operate between Raleigh and Charlotte, while the Carolinian (Trains 79 & 80) will operate only within North Carolina
* Silver Star (Trains 91 & 92) will operate only within Florida.

Other cancelations on Tuesday, Aug. 30, include:

* Crescent (Trains 19 & 20), New York-Atlanta-New Orleans
* Lake Shore Limited (Trains 48/448 & 49/449), Chicago-New York/Boston
* Auto Train (Trains 52 & 53), Sanford, Fla.-Lorton, Va.
* Palmetto (Trains 89 & 90), New York-Savannah
