St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 4/4/12:

The Loop Trolley project, having amassed almost all the $43 million it needs, is ready to move into high gear.

Construction is expected to begin late this year, with the trolleys in operation about a year later.

I grant the writer his point about congestion hampering trolley efficiency. Too often, urban planners and politicians put LRT/streetcar service into place and then give autos priority. Rail transit needs traffic signal pre-emption in order to give riders an expeditious ride; otherwise folks might as well walk. B)

Trolley is the right answer for historic urban core

18 August 2012 • ROADS&BRIDGES
The Delmar Loop in the historic urban core of St. Louis is experiencing a wave of revitalization thanks to the efforts of local business, government and community members working together to revive and renew the area, both physically and economically.

Loop and downtown trolleys on track to spark development, say supporters
In Region

Construction of the Loop trolley could begin this fall and be completed next year -- despite the withdrawal of the Missouri History Museum’s $1 million pledge to help fund the line between the Delmar Loop and Forest Park.
