The Honolulu Rail Transit Project has made its way to Aloha Stadium. Last month, crews completed construction of the final column from East Kapolei to Aloha Stadium. A total of 452 columns are supporting the first 10 miles of the elevated rail guideway.

In addition, construction crews have completed majority of the track work on the elevated guideway in the Pearl City and Aiea areas. In just a few weeks, the last segments of the guideway at Aloha Stadium will be installed.

The initial budget of $5.26 billion included the financing costs.

The Honolulu Rail Transit Project reached a major milestone, this week. Crews set the final guideway segments on Kamehameha Highway at Aloha Stadium.

Construction crews built nearly 11 miles of the elevated guideway from East Kapolei to Halawa. The first span (distance between two columns) along Kamehameha Highway was put in last December.

The guideway segments were cast at the project's precast yard in Kapolei.

Construction crews are busy working on the rail project from Kapolei, through Waipahu, Pearl City and Aiea, and past Aloha Stadium toward Pearl Harbor and the airport.

All of the guideway spans for more than ten miles have been erected.  The mainline trackwork has been installed.

Highway widening activities continue and restoration of highway medians and traffic signal upgrades are underway.

Crews are now building the rail stations on the ewa end of the project.

While others are performing survey work and checking for underground utilities in the airport area.

The Rail Operations Center is nearly completed.  The first six rail cars have been delivered there, and they'll undergo testing up on the tracks on the guideway later this summer.

HONOLULU — The News&Observer reports that Hawaiian Hawaii lawmakers proposed a steep increase in hotel taxes to pay for Honolulu's light rail transit project.

Leaders in the House and Senate agreed to the last-minute proposal before a legislative deadline Friday. The bill would raise the transient accommodation tax paid by visitors from 9.25% to 12% for 10 years.

Lawmakers expect the proposed hotel tax increase to raise $1.3 billion by 2027. For the full story, click here.

Hawaii Tribune-Herald, 8/27/17:

Hawaii scrambles to keep train project from going off rails

Train tracks supported by concrete pillars snake through Oahu neighborhoods and across its lush scenery, ending abruptly in an empty, overgrown field. They’re part of a planned $9.5 billion rail transit project — one of the most expensive per capita in the United States.
