Rail Project Celebrates Milestone!
The Honolulu Rail Project features four distinct guideway sections: the Farrington Highway Section (East Kapolei to Pearl Highlands), the Kamehameha Highway Section (from Pearl City to Aloha Stadium), the Airport Guideway (from Aloha Stadium to Middle Street), and the City Center Guideway (from Middle Street into Ala Moana). While the first two phases of guideway work are about 99-percent complete, the Airport Guideway is hitting full stride and is even slightly ahead of schedule.
Work on the Airport Guideway reached a milestone this week with the installation of the section's first support columns. HART and contractor Shimmick/Traylor/Granite Joint Venture spent the past few weeks drilling foundations for the guideway's support columns and recently began erecting the first set of piers that will support the 5.15-mile long section. In our photo of the week, crews pour concrete to build the support piers that will range from 24 to 71 feet high and have foundations that can be as much as 300 feet deep.
