Cap Metro CEO: Austin “not ready” for light rail
The head of the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Tuesday put a wet sponge on the feverish hopes that light rail transit in Austin could become a reality sooner rather than later. - See more at: http://www.austinmon...h.pdn3KEgQ.dpuf

Not a "wet sponge;" but damp water.  :P

Progressive Railroading, 1/28/16:

Austin's Capital Metro taps AECOM for central corridor transit study

The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority has selected AECOM to conduct an analysis of transportation options for the central corridor in Austin, Texas.

The Project Connect Central Corridor Study that began in 2014 will continue with AECOM leading the effort, as the firm works with transportation agencies, stakeholders and the public to shape Austin's transit future, Capital Metro officials said in a press release.

AECOM will consider all practical transportation modes to enhance transit options in the central corridor, including rail. The corridor, which includes Austin's downtown, is bordered by U.S. Route 290 to the south, Capital Metro's Red Line rail route to the east, Ranch to Market Road 2222 to the north and the MoPac Expressway to the west.

Austin City Council asked to consider light rail bond

AUSTIN, Texas — This fall, voters could see a bond supporting an urban light rail on the City of Austin November ballot.

The Urban Transportation Commission voted unanimously recommending city council consider rail options as part of a 2016 bond proposal.

Light Rail Advocates Want November Ballot

It has been almost two years since a plan to build a light rail line through Austin failed. Now, a new effort is underway to get the idea back on track.

A misleading portion of the video shows Washington, DC Metro as light rail.  Station personnel probably gabbed file footage to show something moving on tracks.  There is a photo of Dallas light rail.  Why couldn't the station gotten video from DART?  Oh well.    Sloan

Light rail advocates present new bond proposal

The Central Austin Community Development Corporation has put in a request to city council to place a $397.5 million Guadalupe-North Lamar light rail starter line on the November ballot. The 5.3-mile line would be the first phase of a larger system plan. The proposal comes on the heels of Mayor Steve Adler’s roughly $800 million mobility bond proposal.

Light rail not ready, too contentious to be in 2016 transportation bond There is no light rail option in any of the transportation bond proposals the Austin City Council is set to vote for on Thursday.

Why not start small with a heritage trolley line like Charlotte?  The public gets use to it, and then citizens will want a larger system.

Light rail not included in Austin's $720M mobility bond package

The Austin City Council on Friday gave the green light to a $720 million mobility bond package. The ballot language still needs to be approved, but the referendum is tentatively set to go before voters in November. If approved, the mobility bond package would cost the average taxpayer an additional $56 a year. That money would be used to improve some of Austin's busiest roadways and add sidewalks and bike lanes throughout the city. But the one mode of transportation that is not included in the bond package is light rail.
