The Ghan which currently runs from Adelaide to Alice Springs in Australia will start running all the way to Darwin. This becomes possible as a result of the completion of the Alice Springs - Darwin line, one of the more significant additions to trunk railroads in the world. There was an article in the Weekend Australian this past weekend on this new service.

The following from the Rail Australia's website.

The Ghan will commence regular services to/from Darwin from 8 Feb 2004.

The extension of The Ghan to Darwin will further enhance what is already considered one of the world's great train journeys. The 47 hour, 2979km transcontinental journey will feature off train touring options at Alice Springs and Katherine Gorge at modest extra cost. You will soon be able to experience the tropical splendour of the Top End aboard The Legendary Ghan.

As you might have guessed, I just got back from a week in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
