Los Angeles Times, 2/1:

Delays surged last year as Metrolink broke in a new system to prevent accidents

Despite efforts by Metrolink officials to improve service, the number of late trains on Southern California's commuter railroad nearly doubled last year, to the dismay of thousands of riders.

Delays surged from 2,382 in 2014 to 4,395 in 2015, with the sharpest increase occurring in August, when about 15% of trains were late compared with less than 7% the year before, according to Metrolink records.

"We knew we were going to have a rough year," said Gary Lettengarver, chief operating officer for Metrolink. "Conflicts with freight trains plus track construction were problems. And we're learning to use positive train control. This is a technology no one really knows about."

Calif.’s Metrolink, the first passenger railroad in the nation to operate Positive Train Control (PTC), has now taken its commitment to safety a step further by announcing interoperability with Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR). Metrolink can now use its PTC technology on tracks owned by UPRR on the Ventura County Line north of the Moorpark station and the Riverside Line.

UPRR will operate PTC throughout tracks owned by Metrolink on the Ventura County Line south of the Moorpark station and the Antelope Valley Line.

“With this development, Metrolink, as a leader in safety, has significantly expanded Positive Train Control across its network of shared track,” said Metrolink Board Chair Andrew Kotyuk. “The Southern California rail system is safer because both Metrolink and Union Pacific Railroad will be able to operate in Southern California with life-saving PTC technology.”

In June 2015, Metrolink launched PTC in Revenue Service Demonstration (RSD) across the entire 341-mile network the agency owns. With this accomplishment, Metrolink became the first railroad in the nation to have PTC running during regular service on all of its hosted lines. In October 2017, Metrolink achieved PTC interoperability with Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) and is now the first commuter railroad in the nation to achieve interoperable PTC with both BNSF and UPRR.

Metrolink is coordinating with its remaining operating partners, Amtrak and North County Transit District to achieve interoperability this year across all shared tracks in the Southern California region.

Progressive Railroading, 10/29/20

FCC approves Southern California Rail Authority PTC operations

The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Wireless Telecommunications Bureau last week authorized the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA) to deploy an interoperable positive train control (PTC) system on its rail lines serving California’s Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.

Under a license modification, the FCC granted SCRRA permanent authority to operate 17 PTC wireless radio base stations, 546 PTC wireless radio wayside stations, and related mobile locomotive stations.

Los Angeles, CA Times, 1/2/21:

The U.S. finally has a system to prevent deadly rail accidents. It took 50 years

Hazy sunshine illuminated the suburban landscape as Eric Forbes settled into the seat of his Friday afternoon train.

It was Sept. 12, 2008, 4:22 p.m. Forbes, 56, an administrator at Cal State Northridge, was headed home to be there in time for his son’s first school dance. Relaxing, he watched out the window as the train rolled north from the Chatsworth station then banked to the left, heading for the narrow tunnel under the Santa Susana Pass. The curve allowed Forbes to see down the track. Motion caught his eye.
