An early look at plans for new rail, pedestrian bridges over the Potomac
The $2 billion rail project between D.C., Virginia is on track to double capacity over the Potomac River by 2030

Virginia is advancing a $2 billion plan to expand freight and passenger train traffic over the Potomac River, hoping to alleviate a growing bottleneck at a bridge that has connected the Southern and Northeastern U.S. for more than a century.

The plan calls for a new two-track span parallel to the Long Bridge, which serves as the main route for trains traveling south of the nation’s capital. The new span between Washington and Arlington would double train capacity to support commerce and increasing demands for passenger rail along the busy East Coast corridor.

Virginia unveiled design concepts for the project this month, the state’s latest move to expand rail options across the state. It’s part of a $3.7 billion deal Virginia sealed last year with Amtrak and CSX that would bolster capacity, expand routes to new cities and ease rail connections to the nation’s capital.

Virginia seeks additional funding for Long Bridge project

Inflation leads to estimated $389 million shortfall

RICHMOND, Va. — The cost of a second rail bridge over the Potomac River — a key part of Virginia’s plan for major expansion of Amtrak and commuter-rail service on the I-95 corridor south from Washington, D.C.— has risen substantially, leading to a $389 million shortfall, the Washington Post reports.=

The new two-track Long Bridge across the river, which would parallel an existing two-track bridge, is now estimated to cost almost $2.28 billion, an increase of $239.7 million since a year ago, according to the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s draft budget for fiscal 2024. The agency says inflation is responsible for the increase.

The new bridge is part of a project that would create separate but parallel two-track routes for passenger and CSX Transportation freight traffic, under the agreement reached by Virginia and the freight railroad in 2019 [see “Virginia, CSX announce major rail infrastructure plan,” Trains News Wire, Dec. 20, 2019].

New Potomac bridge: Officials take first steps on project to double passenger rail capacity between Va. and DC

Preliminary soil testing will soon begin before construction of a passenger rail bridge that aims to untangle daily passenger rail service between Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The long-term goal of the Long Bridge Project is “to double the capacity of passenger rail between Washington, D.C. south, into Virginia,” said DJ Stadtler, executive director of the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority.

Virginia agency nears start of work on new Potomac rail bridge

WASHINGTON — Virginia Passenger Rail Authority officials will seek $829 million in federal funding for the project to build a new bridge over the Potomac River, a key portion of the plan to greatly expand passenger rail service by creating separate passenger and freight main lines south of Washington.

But the Washington Post reports that, while the first contract for the new $2.3 billion companion to the Long Bridge across the Potomac is expected to be awarded this year, delays are possible if the state is unable to close a $729 million funding gap.

The authority is seeking federal funding through two grant programs, with executive director DJ Stadtler saying, “Our program is ready to go, so this is an opportunity for the feds to make an investment that shows immediate return.”

The pedestrian bridge appears to be a continuation of the walking/biking trail in Long Bridge Park, a linear park adjacent to the CSX main where Amtrak also runs through Crystal City.

Big rail improvements headed to Northern Virginia — including a new Long Bridge

Big rail improvements are coming to Northern Virginia; elected officials announced Thursday the state has received $729 million in federal funding.

The money will go toward the construction of a new Long Bridge over the Potomac River. Currently a major chokepoint on East Coast, the project will double the bridge’s capacity.
