WMATA Service Advisory:

 

Weekend service adjustments August 7-9 for rebuilding

 

Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of August 7-9 with service adjustments on five rail lines beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing on Sunday.

 

This weekend, Green Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals. Yellow and Blue Line trains will operate every 20 minutes. Red Line trains will operate every 8-16 minutes with additional trains between Silver Spring and Friendship Heights between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

 

From 12:01 a.m. Saturday through 3 a.m. closing Sunday, buses will replace Orange and Silver Line trains between Ballston, West Falls Church and McLean stations. East Falls Church station is closed. Orange and Silver Line trains will operate every 12-20 minutes outside the work zone (see below).

 

Metro is investing $5.5 billion to install new rail, ties, platforms, escalators, signals, lighting, communication systems, and more. It represents the largest capital investment -- and work effort -- since the system's original construction in the early 1970s.

 

 Red Line
Trains every 8-15 minutes

Red Line trains will operate as follows throughout the weekend:

  • Between Shady Grove & Glenmont: trains every 15 minutes
  • Between Silver Spring & Friendship Heights: every 8-10 minutes from 9AM-9PM only

Rail, tie and insulator renewal for a safer ride will cause Red Line trains to share one track between Friendship Heights & Medical Center.

 

Orange Line
Buses replace trains between Ballston & West Falls Church

Orange Line trains will operate as follows:

  • Between Vienna & West Falls Church: regular weekend frequency (12-20 minutes daytime)
  • Between Ballston & New Carrollton: trains every 10 minutes

From 12:01 a.m. Saturday through closing Sunday, buses will replace Orange Line trains between Ballston and West Falls Church stations. During this time, East Falls Church station will be closed. Free shuttle buses will operate on two routes:

  • Orange Express buses will operate between Ballston and West Falls Church stations with no intermediate stops. Please add up to 15 minutes of travel time.
  • Orange Local buses will operate between Ballston and West Falls Church, making an intermediate stop at East Falls Church. Please allow 12-15 minutes of travel time for each station stop.

Last Train Times: The last eastbound train of the night from Vienna will depart 18 minutes earlier than normal to allow for shuttle bus connections. On Friday and Saturday nights, the last eastbound train will leave Vienna at 2:07 a.m. en route to West Falls Church. The last eastbound train will depart Ballston at 2:42 a.m. On Sunday, the last train will leave Vienna at 11:07 p.m. and depart Ballston at 11:42 p.m..

Work Performed: NTSB-recommended track circuit module replacement, platform rehabilitation and third rail power protection upgrades between Ballston and West Falls Church.

 

 Silver Line
Trains between Wiehle-Reston East & McLean only

Silver Line trains will operate at regular weekend frequency (every 12-15 minutes daytime) between Wiehle-Reston and McLean only.

From 12:01 a.m. Saturday through closing Sunday, free shuttle buses will bridge train service between between McLean and Ballston stations. East Falls Church Station will be closed. Please add up to 15 minutes of travel time.

Orange Line trains will provide service from Ballston to Downtown DC and Stadium-Armory. Customers traveling to Largo Town Center must transfer to a Blue Line train at any station between Rosslyn and Stadium-Armory to continue their trip.

Last Train Times: The last train of the night from Wiehle-Reston East will depart 24 minutes earlier than normal to allow for shuttle bus connections. On Friday and Saturday nights, the last train will leave Wiehle-Reston East at 1:45 a.m. On Sunday, the last train will leave Wiehle-Reston East at 10:45 p.m..

 Blue Line
Trains every 20 minutes

Blue Line trains will operate every 20 minutes throughout the weekend.

Blue Line trains will share one track between Braddock Road and Van Dorn Street to allow for grout pad rehabilitation and third-rail power protection upgrades.

 

 Yellow Line
Trains every 20 minutes

Yellow Line trains will operate every 20 minutes between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq only. Customers traveling to/from stations north of Mt. Vernon Sq should use a Green Line train to complete their trip.

Yellow Line trains will share one track between Braddock Road and Huntington to allow for grout pad rehabilitation and third-rail power protection upgrades.

 

 Green Line
Regular regular weekend service
