CSX Honors Seaboard System Railroad Heritage with New Locomotive Paint Design

June 30, 2023 – CSX has unveiled a newly repainted locomotive honoring the Seaboard System Railroad, one of the heritage lines that merged to form the modern company. The locomotive has been repainted with a special hybrid design and renumbered CSX 1982 to commemorate a defining year in the birth of CSX.

CSX 1982 is the third in a series of heritage locomotives conceived by employees at the company’s Waycross Locomotive Shop in Georgia as a way of celebrating CSX’s rich history. The company previously unveiled units commemorating the B&O Railroad and the Chessie System.

For the Seaboard System locomotive, the Waycross team designed and executed a paint scheme that features modern CSX colors on the front cab portion of the unit and transitions to the heritage Seaboard System logo and gray, red and yellow colors on the portion that houses the locomotive’s power systems.

Al Varnadore, a CSX carman painter, commented on the satisfaction he felt from working on such a meaningful project, saying, "My granddaddy worked here when it was Seaboard Coast Line. So having the opportunity to work on this unit is like being a part of something that he was a part of."

Created in 1982 with the merger of the Seaboard Coast Line and the Louisville & Nashville railroads, the Seaboard System was the first step under the CSX Corporation holding company to combine all of the company’s heritage railroads into one.

CSX 1982 and other locomotives in the heritage series will be placed into revenue service and travel CSX’s 20,000 rail network, reinforcing employee pride in the history of the railroad that continues to move the nation’s economy with safe, reliable and sustainable rail-based transportation services.

Louisville & Nashville Heritage Locomotive Enters Service on CSX

August 25, 2023 - CSX has introduced the sixth locomotive in its heritage series, a freshly painted unit honoring the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Designated CSX 1850, the locomotive will be placed into service, carrying the L&N colors across the 20,000-mile CSX network.

The paint scheme was designed and applied at the CSX Locomotive Shop in Waycross, Georgia, which has produced all six units in the heritage series celebrating the lines that came together to form the modern CSX. Like the other heritage locomotives, the L&N unit combines the heritage railroad’s iconic logo and colors on the rear two-thirds of the engine with today’s CSX colors and markings on the cab end.

Chartered by the State of Kentucky in 1850, the L&N grew into a vital transportation link between the Gulf Coast and the nation’s heartland. The railroad was absorbed by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, which subsequently became part of the Chessie System and, ultimately, today’s CSX.

The CSX heritage series is reinforcing employee pride in the history of the railroad that continues to move the nation’s economy with safe, reliable and sustainable rail-based transportation services.

CSX unveils L&N heritage locomotive

August 26, 2023

Locomotive is sixth in railroad's heritage diesel fleet

WAYCROSS, Ga. — CSX has released its latest heritage diesel, this time honoring predecessor Louisville & Nashville.

The ES44AH locomotive will wear number 1850, which the railroad explains signifies the year the L&N was chartered by the state of Kentucky. The railroad later became part of the Seaboard Coast Line, then part of Chessie System and CSX.

It becomes the sixth locomotive in the CSX heritage series, which feature the current CSX paint scheme on the nose and the predecessor’s scheme on the rear two-thirds.   . . .
