City train station rehab scheduled

 

 

 

The crumbling concrete at the Fredericksburg train station is set for repairs in the not-too-distant future.

 

The Operations Board for the Virginia Railway Express recently approved a contract for the station’s rehabilitation project.

 

The project, at a cost of more than $422,000, is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2022, according to VRE.

 

The project calls for rehab work on the station’s original platforms, which will result in longer platforms. An additional stair tower also will be added. The project also calls for concrete repairs to the bridges over Charles, Princess Anne, Caroline and Sophia streets.

A center island platform would be nice, but probably not in the plans.    On a Fest  ( I believe in 2015) there was confusion as to what side our train would show up on, and we went a few times downstairs and up to the other side.  No human presence, just muffled announcements.

The Fredericksburg VRE station is inching closer towards a $5 million construction project. Last week, the commuter rail service's Operations Board approved a task order for construction management services.

The southern portion of the Fredericksburg Station Track 2 platform will be closed until further notice for sandblasting related to station rehabilitation. The stairs to Track 2 will be inaccessible, but the ramp and elevator will remain open.

 

VRE has been notified that the southern portion of the Fredericksburg Station Track 2 platform will be closed until further notice for sandblasting related to station rehabilitation. The stairs to Track 2 will be inaccessible, but the ramp and elevator will remain open. Trains will not be able to board/deboard from the southern portion of the platform. We have not received an estimated duration for the work, but these areas will reopen when the sandblasting is complete.

Starting Wednesday, January 3, the northern section of the Track 2 platform at the Fredericksburg Station will be blocked due to station rehabilitation work. The ramp and the stairs to Parking Lot B will be inaccessible. The elevator will remain accessible.

Probably no room there, but that station cries for an island platform, given the potential for trains in either direction to be on either track.  Being an elevated station, the walk between the two side platforms is tedious (down and up).

VRE completes Fredericksburg station project

 

Virginia Railway Express (VRE) recently hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of improvements to its rail station in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

 

The $14.4 million project included rehabilitating existing platforms, stairs and all four rail bridges; constructing stairs to provide direct access from the platform to a parking lot; improving Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) access to the west-side elevator; adding signage, sidewalks and lighting; and refreshing the platform canopies and other areas with paint, according to a VRE press release.

 

Because of the improvements, the station and surrounding structures now resemble their original appearance from nearly a century earlier, they said. The work also will help maintain the structural integrity of the station and bridges in the future.
