Minneapolis, MN Star-Tribune, 5/2/12:

Light-rail may be Bottineau Line option

While nothing is set in stone for a proposed transit corridor in the north Hennepin County suburbs, one thing is clear after recent public meetings: people prefer a train to a bus, even though the latter would cost less.

Story here. This would be a natural extension of the Blue Line (current Hiawatha Corridor) beyond downtown Minneapolis.

While I support the argument for running new light rail lines through densely populated areas to tap those ridership generators, there are benefits to running via less populated areas as well. For one, the LRT can run faster since it does not have stops as close together... which speeds up the ride for those travelling through the area. Being on its own right-of-way sure helps. A good example is Hoboken, where the HBLRT ended up following an old freight right-of-way around the west side of the city instead of through the main part of the city. That route generated its own ridership as transit-oriented development sprung up around the new stations. For Metro Transit, this may not be entirely possible as the interviewed resident pointed out, as it is considered to be green park space. But light rail should not be passed up. Since Bottineau will be an extension of the Blue Line (currently Hiawatha) northwest of Target Field (station to be The Interchange), these people would have a one seat ride to both the MSP International Airport and the Mall of America.

"Yes, houses would be displaced, but there are more houses," Schumacher said. "But there isn't more parkland to be taken up."

Experience has shown that those displaced usually end up in better circumstances.

Excellent news! These people will have a one-seat ride to downtown Minneapolis, MSP Airport, and Mall of America. A busway just would not have been the same.
