Sounds promising that all of the damaged equipment can be repaired and returned to service, although Amtrak took another financial hit on the cleanup in the aftermath of this incident.

Kevin Burkholder has posted some additional photos on RailPictures.net of AMTK 102 being loaded on a heavy duty flat car and hauled to Montpelier Junction:

The conductor's side of the cab is extensively damaged and full of mud and debris.   I believe the "person most seriously injured in the Monday derailment of the Amtrak Vermonter, a conductor who had been riding in the locomotive alongside the engineer," was likely sitting in the conductor's seat when the derailment occurred.

Do Amtrak conductors normally ride up in the engine?  I would have thought he'd be back in the body of the train.  If not walking the train they usually can be found in the cafe car.

Boardman's description is "a conductor," not necessarily "the conductor" riding in the cab.

This could have been a newly assigned conductor on a "study ride" before being "examined on the physical characteristics of the railroad."   It could also have been a "dead-heading" employee who chose to ride in the cab rather than in a passenger car.  I'm sure there are other possibilities.

Amtrak conductors don't routinely ride in the cab; I don't know of any thing that would prevent them from riding in the cab so long as all of the conductor and assistant conductor duties are being fulfilled.

Boston.com, 10/9:

Drones used during response to Vermont’s Amtrak derailment

Two hours after an Amtrak train derailed in Vermont on October 5, drones from the University of Vermont’s disaster response team were in the air over the crash site.

Authorities needed to pictures of the site to guide their response to the crash, and within an hour, the drones took 280 images that were geo-located to the scene, according to a Slate report.

By the end of the day, the university’s Spatial Analysis Lab, which operated the dones, put together a map of the crash site for investigators.

NTSB RAB1703 adopted 6/7/17:

Railroad Accident Brief: National Passenger Railroad Corporation (Amtrak) Passenger Train 55 Collision with Rocks and Subsequent Derailment on the New England Central Railroad

Executive Summary

On October 5, 2015, at 10:22 a.m. eastern daylight time (EDT), southbound National Passenger Railroad Corporation (Amtrak) passenger train 55 derailed at milepost (MP) 65.2 after striking a rock pile that fouled the track on the New England Central Railroad (NECR) Roxbury Subdivision track near Northfield, Vermont. The collision caused the locomotive and four coach cars to derail; the locomotive and the first coach car slid down a steep embankment. (See figure 1.) Four train crew members and three passengers were injured. Amtrak estimated the equipment damages at $10 million, and the NECR estimated the track-related damages at $200,000.

Probable Cause

The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of the accident was the collision of the train with debris from a rock slide that fouled the track.

For more details about this accident, visit www.ntsb.gov/investigations/dms.html and search for NTSB accident ID DCA16FR001.
