First Look: Alstom LRV Arrives for Toronto’s Finch West LRT

The first Alstom Citadis Spirit light rail vehicle has arrived for the C$2.5 billion (US$1.95 billion) Finch West LRT project in northwest Toronto. The 11-kilometer (6.8-mile) line is slated to open in 2023.

 

The new line is a P3 of Infrastructure Ontario; Metrolinx; and Mosaic Transit Group (MTG), a joint venture of ACS Infrastructure Canada Inc., Aecon, and CRH Canada Group Inc. that has a DBFM (design, build, finance, maintain) contract. There will be 18 stations, with an underground interchange at the Finch West station (connecting to the Toronto Transit Commission Line 1 Yonge-University subway) and a below-grade stop at Humber College (see map below). Trains are expected to run every 5-7 minutes during peak hours.

   A Toronto transit line is actually being built quickly for once as vehicle tests begin 

 

 

 

You can't go a minute in this city without someone grumbling about LRT construction. But as Toronto commuters and motorists complain about the long-delayed Line 5 Eglinton Crosstown, there's another LRT being built in the city, and this Line 6 route feels like it's happening a whole lot faster than its sibling line to the south.

Metrolinx Finch West LRT track installation and vehicle testing updates

 

 

Metrolinx yesterday released the following update on its work on the Finch West LRT track installation and vehicle testing.

 

New infographic (second figure, below) shows how much track has been put down and LRVs continue important testing phase. Nearly half of all track is now installed along the Finch West light rail transit (LRT) route. That’s up from about 35%, when Metrolinx News last updated readers on track installation back in May.

Light rail vehicle (LRV) testing continues

The third Finch West LRV was delivered earlier this year and is joining the other two in the testing phase.

 

Vehicles are running along a 1.8-km test track area between York Gate Boulevard and Sentinel Road.

Metrolinx Humber College Station Reaches Structural Completion

 

Humber College Station is the western terminus of the line, and the second of two underground stations. Light rail vehicles will enter the station through an extended portal that runs down the west side of Highway 27.

Metrolinx has announced the structural completion of its Finch West LRT’s Humber College Station. To reach this milestone, the agency said crews excavated to depths of up to roughly 39 feet, poured 706,293 cubic feet of concrete, installed 1.4 million pounds of steel and completed masonry work to create the framework for the Finch West LRT’s western terminus.

 

“Whether you’re heading to class at Humber College, shopping in one of the vibrant local communities, or making other transit connections to travel across the region, the Finch West LRT will be the way to go,” Metrolinx said. “With 18 stops across [6.8 miles], there will be no better way to get moving across northwest Toronto.”

After more than fifty years of talk, northwest Toronto is finally getting an LRT. But as the new line brings higher rents, changing businesses, and on-going construction, residents are demanding a say in how their community will change.

   This is what it's like inside Toronto's brand-new Finch West LRT trains

The Finch West LRT is actually due to open in 2024, at least, if you take Metrolinx's word for it.

The 10.3-kilometre light rail line, destined to operate as the TTC's Line 6 later this year, is nearing the finish line with a projected September completion — a milestone Metrolinx has been building hype over with a string of recent project updates showing the finishing touches being applied for the route.
