The Great Belt Bridge must have new trams: The old ones are cut into small bites
It may be the few who know, but inside the Great Belt Bridge there is a very special vehicle.

A vehicle that has been in use since the bridge's opening in 1997, which transports tools and heavy equipment back and forth inside the bridge.

But it is now time to change the old carts.

"The old trams that we have installed and have been there since the bridge opened have been worn down after many journeys back and forth," says Christian Skovgaard Andersen, Project Manager at Sund & Bælt Holding A / S, for TV EAST.

- There has been a severe technical development, for example with the batteries they drive. It has also made us able to get some better machines, he says.

 

The trolleys drive inside the bridge into a cavity that is six meters high and 20 meters long. They drive on a rail, a so-called monorail, which is a single rail that hangs above the vehicles.

When building the Great Belt Bridge, the current trams were put into the bridge before it was completed.

This means that the carriages must now be taken in a slightly different way, as there is not much space to get them out again.

- In the bridge we have some small hatches the size of a submarine hatch, and it can therefore be a bit difficult to get them out. So what we actually do is cut them up with an angle grinder, and then we take them out into small bites. So we take them down from the rail, cut them up and get them out that way, says Christian Skovgaard Andersen.

 

When the new carts are to be inserted, it will take place after a 'set-up' method. All parts will be gathered like a legion set inside the bridge, says the project manager.

Same function - better version
The new yellow carts are 5.5 meters long and weigh 1.8 tonnes in total. They can ship two people at a time and up to 25 kilos of tools and equipment per cart.

Each wagon also has a form of trailer that can carry heavy loads - like the old wagons, but according to the project manager, the new wagons are a faster and better version.

- The function is similar to the same. They can ship two people, tools and equipment. But in return, the new freight can do much more. The old trailers can load 4-500 kilos, while the new ones can load 1,000 kilos. So you better utilize the weight distribution, and then they can also take longer on a charge, says the project manager.

 

Cheaper than light railways

The new trams will be shipped from England and arrive at the Great Belt Bridge later this month.

Then they will be installed and hopefully in operation during December.

The project itself amounts to about seven million.

"It's a little cheaper than Odense and Aarhus light rail, but we can not carry as many passengers as possible," says Christian Skovgaard Andersen with a glimpse of the eye.
