Brevard County leaders tour Brightline stations, train in pursuit of Cocoa station

The effort to bring a Brightline stop to Brevard County took another step forward on Monday as a contingency of leaders were able to ride the passenger train from West Palm Beach to Miami and toured the pair of train stations.

What You Need To Know
  • Cocoa leaders visited two Brightline train stations on Monday
  • The trip along with riding the train was part of an ongoing dialogue to help bring a Brevard County station to reality
  •  Brightline’s current main objective is to complete its extension to Orlando International Airport in 2022

The group was comprised of representatives from Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Port Canaveral and The Viera Company.

They said the goal was to further the dialogue with Brightline and to get an in-person experience with the amenities of the train itself as well as the stations.

Brightline land purchase could indicate future Cocoa station down the tracks

Brightline land purchase could indicate future Cocoa station down the tracks

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — For those hoping that future Brightline trains won’t just wiz on through Brevard County in between Orlando and West Palm Beach, the company is making multimillion dollar moves on the Space Coast.

Records from the Brevard County Property Appraiser show the passenger train company purchased 33 acres of land in Cocoa just more than a year ago in the area where the track bends away from the coastline and toward the City Beautiful. The land was purchased for $12.5 million in April 2021.

  What You Need To Know
  • Brightline acquired several parcels of land in Cocoa in 2021
  • The passenger train company is currently working on an extension from West Palm Beach to Orlando
  • No formal announcement has been made regarding a Brevard County station, but conversations are ongoing

Brevard officials hope to get Brightline train stop, but that could be years away

With dozens of Brightline passenger trains passing through Central and South Brevard County every day on their trips between Orlando and Miami, demand is building for the passenger rail company to establish a station within Brevard.

But that could be years off.

A major roadblock will be how to pay for a new station in Brevard.

"Stations are not cheap," said Laura Carter, assistant director of the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization, who added that a station could cost as much as $100 million to build.

Brightline initially introduced passenger service between Miami and West Palm Beach, then extended the service to Orlando International Airport in September. Although Brightline helped fund station development in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, and worked with the airport in developing the Orlando station, it has made no funding commitment for a Brevard station.
