Editorial: Do the locomotion
To spend a week in Britain, continental Europe or Japan is to be reminded of one way in which America is distinctly second class: The quality of its passenger rail system.
This status is somewhat obscured here in Northeast, where interstate commutes between population centers are relatively common. But in general, this country has treated its rail network with indifference, allowing it to wither and disappear along vast swaths of the country.

We hope lawmakers can look beyond the inglorious recent history of American passenger rail and provide an overdue reappraisal of its importance. A sound passenger rail system is as important to the nation’s vitality as its highway system or aviation network. It is past time it was treated as such.
