Take a ride inside the aging Hudson River train tunnels that would cost billions to replace (VIDEO)

 

Most commuters never get to see this view of the 105-year old Hudson River rail tunnels from the windows of the trains they ride to and from Penn Station.

 

It was one that Amtrak officials wanted U.S. Senator Cory Booker, D-NJ, to see to make a case for building new tunnels. Booker and others rode in a glass ended rail car that bathed the tube with flood lights, to show the damage done by flood waters from Hurricane Sandy.

 

Last fall, an Amtrak engineering study revealed that the old tunnels had 20 years left at most, before they'd have to be shut down for one year to fix the damage from corrosive salt Sandy left behind.

 

During the tour, Drew Galloway, Amtrak chief of Northeast Corridor Planning and Performance pointed out sections of the concrete bench wall in the tunnel on either side of the rails that were damaged.
