A countdown for commuters on the Port Jervis line. By the end of the year, the MTA says some damaged tracks will be fixed and trains will shoot you straight into New York City.

Wow that's interesting. The MTA really said that? Are they electrifying the Port Jervis Line and building a connection into New York Penn Station within the next 2 or 3 months? Perhaps they meant Hoboken? Did they really think I wasn't going to catch that? :D

Progressive Railroading, 9/27/11:

Metro-North completes flood damage assessment of Port Jervis Line

About $50 million in repairs to the Port Jervis Line will allow train service to be restored by year’s end, according to an assessment of Hurricane Irene-related flood damage recently completed by MTA Metro-North Railroad.

Here is more.

MTA Announcement w/ photos and Powerpoint presentation

Just to keep in mind, if anyone didn't read the latest MTA announcement cited above: The service that can hopefully be restored by the end of 2011 will be that of a one-track railroad. So there will be no second track or passing sidings. Thus one-way commuter service will only be possible. So still expect bus bridges and shuttles west of Harriman until July 2012 when the whole restoration should be complete.

So anyone who might be thinking of a Port Jervis excursion over the "new" track should probably hold off until the latter part of next summer.

MTA has refreshed their progress report as of October 10th on the Port Jervis Line: http://www.mta.info/pj/

Good news to take away from this is that the total project completion date (reopening of both tracks) was moved up from Fall 2012 to June 30, 2012.
