KSNW-TV, Channel 3 in Wichita, KS, 6/9/17:

Union Station prepared to accommodate Amtrak if they return to Wichita

Its been decades in the making.

Today, the Amtrak train made its way back to Wichita.  After 40 years, excitement is buzzing around the air capital about the possible return.

As KSN told you last night, if Amtrak decides to come back, Union Station would be the most logical choice for where it would stop.

Amtrak coming seen as a life changer

It has been nearly 40 years since the last passenger rail service between Texas and Kansas, but that could change.

Stillwater, OK News-Press, 6/19/17:

Amtrak considered test run successful

A silver bullet could soon be speeding through northern Oklahoma towns.

The bullet isn't from a gun, it's an Amtrak train, which is looking at reinstating passenger train service north of Oklahoma City to Kansas.

Story is here.

Some points of error:

Since 1999, the Heartland Flyer has served OKC and Fort Worth, Texas, and a connection in Fort Worth could connect people in Kansas to the Texas Flyer, which connects San Antonio and Chicago.

The Texas Flyer?   Unless I missed some important news, I believe it's called the Texas Eagle.  And one can do a one seat ride to or from Los Angeles via San Antonio 3 days a week, which they seem to ignore as well.

The Wichita (KS) Eagle, 12/10/18:

Can Wichita get Amtrak train service back? Backers’ hopes ride on next year

Chime Onwugbufor lives in Wichita, works in Chicago and commutes on Amtrak.

To get to his job at the tony Tortoise Supper Club, he catches the Amtrak throughway bus about 1 a.m. in Wichita, transfers to the Southwest Chief train at Newton, and pulls in to Chicago’s Union Station a little before 3 p.m.

SNIP

In the past year, 4,900 travelers have boarded the throughway bus that passes through Wichita to fill a gap in rail service between stations in Oklahoma City and Newton, according to Mike Maglieri, a spokesman for Amtrak in Chicago.

Of those, more than 1,700 were Wichita boarders who took the bus to connect to the train in Newton, he said.

“We’ve been really happy with it,” Maglieri said.

But the long-term hope of Amtrak, its passengers and Wichita city government is that actual rail service will be restored to the Wichita gap. They’ve been trying for years to do that without a whole lot of progress.

Newton, KS Kansan, 1/26/19:

McGinn looks at transportation, passenger rail

The Kansas legislative session is in the committee stage, meaning there are not a ton of bills floating around to debate, but there is still plenty happening under the capital dome.

For Sen. Carolyn McGinn, transportation has been at the forefront of work in the early stages of the session — with a report from a transportation task force she chaired last year due for presentation Monday.

Within that report is a recommendation to have the Kansas Department of Transportation pursue the Heartland Flyer — extending an Amtrak train that operates between Texas and Oklahoma north to Newton via Wichita.

The Wichita (KS) Eagle, 6/8/21

Amtrak execs push to get Wichita back on track with proposed route from Newton to OKC

The top two executives of Amtrak committed their support Tuesday to creating a new rail route that would link Newton and Wichita to Oklahoma City and Fort Worth, opening a variety of possible connections to Chicago and the east and west coasts.

The proposal announced by Amtrak President Stephen Gardner and CEO Bill Flynn would close a longstanding gap by extending the Heartland Flyer route from its current northern terminus at Oklahoma City through Ponca City, Wichita and Newton.

It would also increase the frequency of train service between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth.
