Canada pledges federal funds for Ottawa light-rail project's second phase

 

Canadian officials yesterday announced that the federal government will fund up to $1 billion (in Canadian dollars) for the second stage of Ottawa's light-rail transit project.

Ontario commits $C 1bn to Ottawa urban rail expansion

 

THE premier of Ontario Mrs Kathleen Wynne announced on June 3 that the Canadian province will provide $C 1bn ($US 770m) towards Ottawa's $C 3bn Stage 2 LRT project, which will add 30km and 19 stations to the capital's urban rail network.

    Ottawa Stage 2 LRT West Extension tunnel construction begins  

 

 

 

Tunneling has begun on the Stage 2 Light Rail Transit (LRT) West Extension in Ottawa, Ontario. Dignitaries, including Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, Canada’s Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Catherine McKenna and Jeremy Roberts, Ontario Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Children, Community and Social Services and MPP for Ottawa West-Nepean, joined a groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 25 to celebrate the milestone for the 15-km (9.3-mile) Stage 2 West Extension of the O-Train.

Meantime, construction on the western extension of the Confederation Line is facing a potential 10-month delay due to "schedule pressures" related to excavation work and the ongoing pandemic.

The western extension of Ottawa’s light rail transit system is now nearly a year and a half behind schedule — a delay the city blames on a North American-wide shortage of construction materials needed to build the tunneled portion of the line.
