Here's to safety! Bar coasters carry "Be Streetcar Safe" message
10,000 reusable coasters donated by Heidelberg Distributing to be used in Over the Rhine
CINCINNATI – When it comes to safety education, you have to go where the people are.
With the first streetcar arriving tomorrow, Metro has partnered with Heidelberg Distributing to provide 10,000 streetcar safety drink coasters to bars and restaurants in Over the Rhine beginning this weekend.
The coasters feature the “Be Streetcar Safe” message on one side and five streetcar safety tips on the other side:
The streetcars will begin on-street testing yet this year in Over the Rhine. Testing will follow later in the central business district and The Banks on the riverfront. Metro is responsible for safety communications for Cincinnati Streetcar operations.
“We want people to read the coasters and take them home,” said Sallie Hilvers, Vice President of External Affairs for Metro. “The coasters are just one way we’re keeping the Be Streetcar Safe message in front of the community.”
“Heidelberg Distributing was excited to partner on this project,” said Lyndsey Longshore, Marketing Manager for Heidelberg Distributing. “We see this as a great way to remind patrons to be safe and to promote the Budweiser Designate a Driver program.”
Some of the venues featuring the Be Streetcar Safe coasters include Cheers to Art, Cincinnati Symphony/Pops/May Festival, Dunlap Café, Igby’s, Lachey’s Bar, The Lackman, Revolution, Rotisserie, Salazar, and Taft’s Ale House.

First streetcar vehicle arrives in Cincinnati
Cincinnati on Friday took delivery of its first streetcar vehicle, which arrived from a CAF USA manufacturing plant in Elmira Heights, N.Y.
The streetcar was originally scheduled to arrive Oct. 30, but issues associated with loading it onto a flatbed tractor-trailer delayed it until the afternoon, Cincinnati city officials said in a press release.

Opinion: Wait to decide streetcar extension
University of Cincinnati President Santa Ono’s recent endorsement of an Uptown extension of the streetcar line is premature. He has rekindled a debate that is better left until after we can gauge the public’s acceptance of the first phase of the streetcar line. Until then, we have no way of knowing if enough people will use the streetcar to justify an extension.
