Long Island Rail Road Service Update

The Long Island Rail Road is expected to begin operating trains on its electrified branches on a Sunday schedule around noontime.  While snow removal efforts continue, train service will remain suspended on the following branches:

  • Montauk Branch east of Babylon

  • Greenport to Ronkonkoma

  • Port Jefferson Branch east of Huntington

  • Oyster Bay Branch

Please note that roads remain treacherous and customers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel.

LIRR station waiting rooms will remain open around-the-clock through Friday afternoon, January 30, to provide shelter for customers during cold and inclement weather. Platforms and stairways will continue to be cleared and salted.

The LIRR is taking steps to ensure that switches – which allow rail traffic controllers to route trains from one track to another – are working. The railroad has activated switch heaters, lubricated the switches, and treated them with anti-freeze agents. In addition, track workers are positioned in critical locations to be able to respond if any difficulties crop up at switches. Snow-fighting equipment has been deployed throughout the system to deal with snow drifts on the tracks.

Second Avenue Sagas, 1/26/15:

After Cuomo’s surprise, overnight subway service continues without passengers

Four years ago, when a huge winter storm socked New York City, the MTA and then-Gov. David Paterson, in the final few days of his tenure, got unlucky. For the first time in years, two subway trains — an N train in the Sea Beach line and an A train a few hundred yards outside of Howard Beach — were stranded for hours. Snow piled up; trains couldn’t move; lawsuits were filed. It was a political nightmare with the headlines to match. Since then, the MTA has tried to address bad weather events, and they have, by and large, succeeded.

Second Avenue Sagas, 1/27/15:

Following ghost shutdown, passengers allowed back onto subways

Shortly after midnight, an hour and a half after the subways were supposed to stop running, I took a walk to Grand Army Plaza to check out the scene, and while I stood there, three trains arrived in the space of about four minutes. Their doors opened; the automated voices announced the station; and then the trains pulled out. Passengers were nowhere to be found, but by all accounts, as we learned early on in the evening, the subways ran without passengers. Some ran to de-ice elevated tracks while others ran simply because it was easier than powering down for less than 12 hours.

Second Avenue Sagas, 1/28/15:

A postmortem on Cuomo’s questionable subway snow decision

Let’s start today with a proposition: New York City didn’t get as much snow as initially expected, and the supposedly disappointing nature of the storm has clouded the commentary. That said, even if the city had gotten 20-30 inches, I contend that, with service properly curtailed in the right spots, the New York City subways could and should have operated as originally planned. This is a widely, but not entirely, accepted contention, but it’s one that gets to the heart of the role transit plays in city life and the MTA in planning transit.

New York Daily News, 1/28:

Mayor de Blasio plays down 'late notice' he got from Cuomo

on subway shutdown
'It's a run-and-gun situation,' mayor says of notification he received before snow hit Monday.

Mayor de Blasio on Wednesday played down the last-minute heads-up he got from Gov. Cuomo on plans to shut down the transit system ahead of this week's snowstorm.

"Look, it's a run-and-gun situation," de Blasio said during an appearance on "The Today Show."

"People are trying to make decisions in real time, with constantly changing information. You do the best you can," he said. "Where we all agreed was, 'Safety first.'"

Cuomo gave City Hall a heads-up about his decision just minutes before the word went out Monday about the planned historic shutdown of the MTA.
