Higgins: Light Rail Projects in Jeopardy Under Proposed Federal Budget

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Congressman Brian Higgins says two unfinished rail systems won't be completed if the Trump Administration's budget proposal is approved. The projects in jeopardy are the Amherst Metro Corridor and the NFTA Metro Rail to the DL&W project on South Park Avenue and Main Street. Higgins says the project would create jobs, continue growth in the downtown area and place Buffalo among other great cities.

New York's Governor, Andrew Cuomo, has recently set a strong infrastructure agenda.  I am glad to note that one of his priorities for rail transit projects has included Buffalo.   :)  Sloan

NFTA Taking Next Step Towards Light Rail Extension

The next step in extending the light rail line into Amherst is out for bid. The NFTA is seeking a transportation planning environmental and engineering design consultant team to complete the environmental review process required under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQR) along with up to 30 percent preliminary design and engineering for the proposed Amherst-Buffalo Corridor Light Rail Extension.

Buffalo agency taps WSP for light-rail environmental review

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's (NFTA) board has chosen WSP Inc. to provide environmental review and preliminary design for the first phase of the Amherst Metro Rail extension project.

FWIW: WSP is a large consulting engineering firm that traces its roots to William Barclay Parsons who led a team of engineers on the construction of New York City's first subway line.  In recent times, the firm did engineering work for converting Pittsburgh's four streetcar lines to light rail and semi-metro.

NFTA wants to extend Metro Rail to Amherst. Not everyone is on board

When Rep. Brian Higgins first questioned plans for expanding Metro Rail to Amherst back in February, Western New York’s power structure didn’t exactly rally to his side.

Buffalo, NY News Editorial, 12/25/18:

Editorial: New plan improves on Metro Rail extension

The undertaking of any large project requires an openness to change. The change presented by transit planners for a proposed Metro Rail extension looks like a good one, offering the possibility of cost savings, along with increased economic opportunity and better service.
