Some train passengers are great train passengers. Others are most assuredly not.
This story is about the latter contingent, whether they be riding subways, Regional Rail lines, Amtrak or its hoity-toity Acela cars.

Regarding the food issue, I recall Bill Lind, co-publisher of the now defunct New Electric Railway Journal, lamented proscriptions imposed by transit agencies on on-board food consumption. He opined that food ought to be allowed under certain circumstances.
Back in the Reagan era, Fawn Hall, Lt. Colonel Oliver North's assistant, got a citation for eating a banana on Washington Metro! Metro, IMO, was a bit extreme in enforcing a food ban for fruit consumption.

On the other hand, a passenger devouring a major meal can certainly be offensive to others. I recall a plane flight from San Francisco to Dulles. One guy several rows ahead of me was chowing down on a bucket of fried chicken. I like fried chicken, but not smelling it in a confined area at 35,000 feet!
