Summertime, when the living is busy

July has flown by with a birthday to celebrate, new double-decker buses rolling into service, construction booming at Northgate and new affordable family-size apartments opening near Link in the Rainier Valley. Link light rail is 8 years old!

July 18th marked the eighth anniversary of the launch of Link light rail in Seattle, the culmination of more than 40 years of discussions, plans, arguments, fitful starts and stops and ultimately the catalyst for a new era of mobility in Central Puget Sound. Take a walk along memory lane to Link launch day.

 

Making progress on Northgate Link Extension

Crews finished another major milestone on Northgate Link Extension, hand-digging 23 cross passages that connect the two parallel light rail tunnels. Take a ride through the tunnel and get a glimpse of the elevated Northgate Station.

 

Double deckers are coming!

Sound Transit debuted one of 32 new double decker buses outside of Union Station. These will go into service by the end of the year. Get a sneak peek at the new rides.

Rolling into autumn with more trips, longer tunnels and new construction

 

It has been a busy summer and we’re heading into fall with a full head of steam. Check out the latest on new Sounder trips from Pierce County, amazing underground footage from beneath Bellevue and how we’re using an unconventional approach to get light rail to Federal Way faster.

More Sounder south trips are coming!

Sounder service between Seattle and Lakewood gets an 18% boost starting Monday, September 25th. Not only will riders have more choices, but trains will come more often. During peak hours, Sounder trains will arrive as often as every 20 minutes. Get a peek at the new Sounder schedule.

 
 

Making progress underground in Bellevue

Sound Transit contractors began mining the new light rail tunnel under downtown Bellevue in February and are now more than 500 feet into their 2,000-foot trip. We installed a time-lapse camera to get a look at how it's done. Watch the excavation in action and learn the many steps it takes to build a light rail tunnel.

 

 

What is "design-build"?

Traditionally, transportation projects in the United States employ a design-then-bid-then-build method of project delivery. Sound Transit hopes a different method—design-build—will expedite delivery and create cost certainties for the Federal Way Link Extension project. Learn more about design-build.
