Well they are now showing that #5(20) got to GSC (Glenwood Springs) 23 minutes late, at 2:16 PM MDT (which is 4:16 PM EDT).

However, they are boldly predicting that this train will tie up at Emeryville on Monday at 4:12 PM PDT, 37 minutes early.

I hope Bill isn't throwing peoples luggage off the train to make it lighter as it moves west, just to match or beat his statistical predictions. :D

Skip,

You "WOW"'ed too soon:

The latest:

As of the last report at 8:13 am at Winnemucca, NV (WNN), it was running 2 hours late.

However they still project an arrival this afternoon/evening at 5:15 PM, which is just 26 minutes off the advertised. Remember that's 8:15 PM to those of us on the right coast.

I knew it was to good to true. UP would not let a passenger train arrive on time. Estimated arrival: 2 hours and 39 minutes late. As of the last report at 3:30 pm between Truckee, CA (TRU) and Colfax, CA (COX), it was running 4 hours and 24 minutes late.

Bill is very lucky, regardless of the outcome of his trip. Had he planned his westbound journey 3 days later (leaving Chicago on Tuesday 8/23), he would have run into this:

TRAIN 6 ANNULLED AT OMA DUE TO TRACKWORK AT OSC
ALL PAX TO BUS AT OMA STATION
ETA 2HRS LATE AS OF 2200 CST 22 AUG

#6(20) was annulled at Omaha tonight, which means the passengers for #5(23) will be bustituted to Omaha where #5 will originate. Bill probably passed this ill-fated train halfway through his trip, most likely in the Rockies.

For those who went to bed on the east coast not knowing the results of Bill's trip, #5(20) got to Emeryville at 8:36 PM PDT (11:36 PM Eastern). With a due time of 4:49 PM, he was 3 hours 47 minutes late. Hopefully dinner was served on that train, and Bill and his wife can just check into their hotel and relax in a bed that is not moving at 79 mph. Good show; that was fun tracking Bill's trip. If anyone else is taking such a trip, let us know and we'll come along vicariously as we did the past few days with Bill. :D

Mr. Korell,
It was released and ran to Chicago as required but late. So Tommrow's 5(23) will not be bussed.

We survived! Great timekeeping until Salt Lake (nearly an hour early), then downhill until an 8:36pm arrival in Emeryville (predicted arrival 8:12pm). Got to downtown San Francisco and into our hotel at about 9:30pm and to one of our favorite restaurants (Scala's Bistro) at 10:30 (open until midnight, still very busy at 11pm). Amtrak did not serve a dinner coming into EMY, but that worked OK for us. Big problem SLC to EMY was slow orders and trackwork on Donner Pass. UP actually did a decent job with dispatching: only one minor delay for a freight. We passed five freights on sidings heading up the Front Range to Moffat Tunnel. Full report later, but here is a quick look: * = Poor ***** + Excellent Sleeping car attendant: ***** Car comfort and condition: *** Dining car food: **** Dining car service: **** Timekeeping to Salt Lake City: ***** Timekeeping SLC to Emeryville: * Overall experience: **** Basically, the crew on that train was super, and I will be letting the Amtrak HQ know about that. They are a credit to the Company. And tonight at SBC Park in San Francisco: Phillies 10, Giants 2! Bill
