Progressive Railroading, 5/27/15:

Santa Cruz agency eyes new passenger-rail service

California's Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (SCCRTC) is soliciting public feedback on a study that examines the potential for launching passenger-rail service along the Santa Cruz Branch Rail Line.

More here.  Very interesting. The San Francisco Bay area already has two commuter rail agencies in service, namely CalTrain and ACE.  A third should partially open by the end of next year, SMART.  If this line to Santa Cruz goes into service under a separate agency, it would be the area's fourth.  It could I surmise, be operated as a CalTrain extension as well, much as CalTrain's own service runs beyond San Jose down UP's mainline to Gilroy.
