The Globe and Mail, Toronto, 5/28:

U.S. bridge collapse forces CN to divert rail traffic

Canadian National Railway Co. is diverting its mainline rail traffic after the collapse of a Minnesota bridge that connects the West Coast with the key hub of Chicago.

The wooden bridge, which crosses the Rat Root River near International Falls in northern Minnesota and carries about 10 per cent to 15 per cent of CN’s freight volumes, burned and collapsed on Wednesday morning.

CN said it is building a replacement bridge that is expected to take three days to complete. Chicago-bound trains from Western Canada are being diverted over the top of Lake Superior and south into Michigan.

Duluth (MN) News Tribune, posted 6/2:

CN rail line back in service after bridge fire

Canadian National Railway crews have restored service to a railroad line that was disrupted when a timber bridge burned and collapsed near International Falls on May 27.

The bridge, which crossed the Rat Root River, is on a major rail line that sees as many as 24 trains per day. The line crosses the border at Ranier — the busiest rail crossing between the U.S. and Canada — and continues south to Duluth.

CN spokeswoman Emily Hamer said trains are being rerouted over a temporary structure while the main bridge is being repaired.

LATE POST

AP via ABC news, 5/28:

Railroad Bridge Fire and Collapse Ruled Accidental
INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. — May 28, 2015, 9:17 PM ET

A fire that caused the collapse of a busy wooden railroad bridge near Minnesota's northern border has been ruled an accident.

Koochiching County Sheriff Perryn Hedlund tells Minnesota Public Radio ( http://bit.ly/1FR18vP ) that fire marshals found no evidence of foul play and believe the fire was started by a mechanical failure. He didn't want to speculate on what went wrong.
