What puzzles me is the cancellation of these train runs due to snow. In other parts of the world, snowstorms do not shut down any service (think: Switzerland, Russia, Norway). Can anyone in the loop outline what technical issues result in these cancellations? Or is it just a pro-active management decision in the event that a train gets stalled with a wire-down and no way to get the then-stranded passengers off? I can also envision the possibility of frozen switches, yet by now there should be mature technology to deal with that.

I think some of it is positioning issues. When service does shut down, as it did for a while, the various consists end up out of their normal positions at the startup of service the next day. For example, 2190, the first New York-Boston Acela of the day, might run with equipment that came off 2193, which was cancelled along with all Boston service during the day of the storm. Same with the Regionals listed above -- they are all among the first runs of the day. I am however scratching my head over the Orlando turn, though that might be due to a very severely delayed southbound train. Turning it there would put it on or close to schedule going northbound. I guess it could be deadheaded to Auto Train in Sanford to be serviced, much like the Sunset Limited was when it used to serve Florida.

Remember the signal issues yesterday that shut down the corridor between NY & Newark. That delayed the Silver's from going south. They were hours behind schedule, the Star especially. So I'd say that your guess is correct Kevin, turning that train in Orlando was the only way to get things reasonably close to being back on schedule.
Alan,

Take care and take trains!
