NJ Transit installing cameras on all light rail trains in response to spate of robberies

Cameras are coming to NJ Transit's light rail trains in a response to riders' concerns about security and a spate of cellphone robberies on the Newark city subway.

"The River Line has implemented on-board cameras, which NJ Transit police can use to monitor activity on the (light rail) vehicle. Cameras will be rolled out in June on Hudson-Bergen and Newark Light Rail lines," said Janice Pepper, NJ Transit director of research.

Interesting comments below the article.   While having cameras won't stop robberies totally, perhaps they will catch other lawbreakers in the act as well, such as people smoking or the illegal vendors that sell candy and trinkets aboard the trains.  Onboard cops are best, but with the cameras, theoretically somebody watching could witness an act and then have police waiting for the perps at the next stop.

NJ.com, 4/10:

NJ Transit is recording the conversations of thousands of its riders

Casual commuter conversations on light rail trains have an unexpected eavesdropper — NJ Transit.

Video and audio surveillance systems designed to make riders more secure are also recording the conversations of light rail passengers at all times.

NJ Transit officials say the on-board cameras and audio surveillance systems are needed to fight crime and maintain security.

ABC News, 4/12/16:

Commuter Rail Defends Audio Surveillance Aboard Trains

New Jersey Transit's director defended the use of audio surveillance systems on some of its trains Tuesday, as some questioned the monitoring's legal and ethical underpinnings.

Audio and video recording currently is in use on the agency's River Line between Trenton and Camden and will be in use on similar light rail trains in Newark and in Hudson County, NJ Transit said Tuesday.

WAMU-FM (NPR) Washington, DC 4/15:

Your Conversation On The Bus Or Train May Be Recorded

When you ride on buses or trains in many parts of the United States, what you say could be recorded. Get on a New Jersey Transit light rail train in Hoboken or Jersey City, for example, and you might notice an inconspicuous sign that says "video and audio systems in use."

A lot of riders are not happy about it.

SNIP

It's not clear how many other transit agencies are doing this. But the answer seems to be a lot.  .  .  .

I don't know why people (and the media) are making such a deal about this.  If video surveillance is OK, why is audio surveillance not OK?  If any type of automatic surveillance makes passengers feel safer, and they themselves have nothing to hide, then this should not be an issue. If somebody is going to confess to a bank robbery aboard the Hudson Bergen Light Rail, somebody who heard them could testify against them under oath, whether there was an audio recording of the conversation or not. Police can't be on every vehicle, but cameras that can see and hear crimes can.  And why be afraid of "official" cameras when anyone can record things with their own phones now?  The cameras are there and while signs that announce their presence and function should not be necessary, they are there as well.

NJ.com 6/22:

NJ Transit keeps recordings of your conversations for a month, it says

NJ Transit officials have broken their silence over what happens to surveillance recordings it makes of passenger conversations on light rail trains.

In April, the state American Civil Liberties Union and commuter groups demanded that NJ Transit disclose information about the surveillance after an NJ Advance Media article revealed that the conversations of passengers on light rail trains were being recorded.

"Audio and video remain in the surveillance device for approximately 30 days, with new video and audio overwriting (recording over) previous files," said Nancy Snyder, an NJ Transit spokeswoman. "It is our practice and procedure."

Newark, NJ Star-Ledger, 6/29/16:

Controversial audio surveillance of NJ Transit riders comes to quiet end

NJ Transit has stopped eavesdropping on conversations aboard its light rail trains after facing a string of criticism over how it stored and handled the recordings.

A spot check of 10 light rail trains on the Hudson-Bergen and Newark Light rail lines on Wednesday found that the word "audio" on all signs warning of the surveillance had been masked by white tape.
