The River, 1/3/21:

Amtrak’s Secret Plan to Fence Off Parts of the Hudson River

There are about 70 miles of picturesque shoreline on the Hudson River’s east bank between Poughkeepsie and Rensselaer. Getting to nearly all of it involves breaking the law.

The solution is to create pedestrian access in selected areas where there is enough room between the tracks and river for people to fish and kayak, etc. The charge for this could be passed on to the people who want this access by requiring them to purchase permits to access these areas.

Said attractions should, if at all possible, be close to legal crossings of the tracks, which would be overpasses or underpasses.   If you have say, a boat dock not located near a legal means of crossing the rail right-of-way, it's going to attract those who would cross the tracks illegally at grade.   People by nature are lazy and may not want to walk a longer route to the nearest overpass when the shortest route involves crossing the tracks.

Times-Union, Albany, NY  6/10/21

Recent death along Amtrak line renews call for safe Hudson River access

Fencing plans, pedestrian crossings on Empire Corridor line at a standstill

A man died after being hit by an Amtrak train May 27 in an area of Columbia County where the rail company has been trying to erect fences and gates to keep people off the tracks.

Amtrak’s plans to fence off four-and-a-half miles of its Empire Corridor rail line at 22 sites between Poughkeepsie and Rensselaer to improve safety has attracted heavy opposition because the fencing would also block access to the Hudson River.

Advocates for river access told Times Union: Hudson Valley they believed the fencing would not have prevented the death, and that Amtrak’s plans made its tracks less safe.
