TfNSW

The world’s first Alstom Citadis X05 Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) has entered the testing and commissioning phase for the Sydney Light Rail project, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of the network.

The CBD and South East Light Rail is a new 7.4-mile light rail network for Sydney, currently under construction. When the network is fully operational, the LRV’s will operate in a couple set, which will have a capacity of up to 450 people, equivalent to up to nine standard buses. The network will have a capacity to move up to 13,500 passengers per hour, which will ensure less congestion on Sydney’s roads and more reliable travel times for commuters.

Passengers have been placed at the heart of the development of this new vehicle, with the emphasis on on-board mobility and comfort. The LRVs include double-doors for improved access and passenger flows, large balcony style windows, multi-purpose areas, ambient LED lighting, and the highest levels of customer safety, including CCTV monitoring, emergency intercoms, and the latest wayfinding aids for passenger information and real time travel information.

The impact to the environment will be minimized through increased energy efficiency achieved by the use of electrical braking, permanent magnet motors, LED lights, sensor-based air-conditioning, and the use of water-based paints and non-hazardous materials for construction. Each vehicle is 99% recyclable at the end of its 30-year lifespan.

Initially the LRV’s will be tested and commissioned at night on a completed part of the network in Sydney’s eastern Suburbs. Testing and Commissioning of the entire fleet of 60 LRV’s with continue into 2019.

Alstom delivered Sydney’s first metro trains as part of the Sydney Metro Northwest project — which is Stage 1 of Sydney Metro, Australia’s biggest public transport project.

Sydney is the first city in Australia to implement a fully-automated metro system, providing a world-class, modern transport solution to meet the needs of the growing city when services start in the first half of 2019. The first three of 22 six-car trains have been delivered to the Sydney Metro Trains Facility at Rouse Hill and are being tested over the coming months.

The $6.4 billion Sydney Metro Northwest project is Stage 1 of the Sydney Metro project. The new system will provide a high level of service, with a train every four minutes in the peak in each direction.

Services will extend into the city in 2024 and will have an ultimate capacity of a metro train every two minutes in each direction under the city.

Nikkei Asian Review, 6/3/19:

Australia's urban boom breathes new life into light rail

Asia-Pacific seen as biggest railway market as traffic jams cause headaches

SYDNEY/TOKYO -- Australia is quickly bringing back the street-level rail lines that used to dominate the country before automobiles rose to prominence, as urban centers swamped with transplants look to ease congestion.

Sydney's 2.1 billion Australian dollar ($1.58 billion) light-rail project, which broke ground in 2015, will snake through 12km of cityscape after its expected completion next year. Because several of the 19 stops will be located on George Street, parts of the bustling city-center avenue have been shut down for construction.

One set of carriages will carry 450 people, or five times the occupancy of a bus. The trains will arrive at a stop every four minutes during rush hours.

To emphasize the renewed focus away from automobiles, the surrounding state of New South Wales will ban cars, buses and other vehicles from operating within a 1km stretch of George Street.

Sydney Metro: first metro train testing in tunnels

Transport For NSW

Published on Aug 30, 2018

Sydney’s first metro train has entered the new railway tunnels in the city’s north west.

Train testing has taken place in the first two kilometres of tunnels between the new Bella Vista and Norwest stations.

Onboard systems were tested as well as signalling, braking and acceleration at different speeds in the tunnel.

Testing will progressively increase up to 100km/h and continue beyond Norwest through the full length of the new tunnels.

The twin 15km railway tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping are Australia’s longest.

More than 10,000km of train testing has taken place so far on the Sydney Metro system, with 12 of the fleet of 22 trains delivered.

Sydney Metro opens in the city’s north west in the second quarter of 2019 – 13 metro stations, 4000 commuter car parking spaces and 36km of new metro rail.

When metro rail is extended into the Sydney CBD and beyond to Bankstown in 2024, Sydney will have 31 metro stations and a 66km metro railway.
