The Boston Globe, 12/16/19

Work on long-delayed South Station tower may finally start

It sounds wild — a sleek skyscraper rising nearly 700 feet above South Station, an aging transportation hub that’s swarmed by thousands of commuters daily.

Indeed, the complications — and costs — involved in pulling off such an engineering feat mostly account for why the project hasn’t gone forward since it was approved by the city more than 13 years ago.

But that could soon change. The project’s developer has found new investors willing to finance the 51-story office-and-condo tower and is nailing down construction details with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

From Amtrak site:

Boston South Station Transportation Center Improvements

Construction of the South Station Air Rights Project began in January 2020. This project will include the completion of the South Station Transportation Center.

During the construction some entrances and exits may be closed or reconfigured. Trains may arrive and depart on a different track than expected. Check your track before boarding and allow extra time to become familiar with the new construction zones.

For more information on the project, visit http://www.southstationairrights.com.

Last time I was in Boston, thanks to the pandemic, was just a month before it got serious, or about the week the above item was posted.    Changes due to this massive project had not yet taken place, but they sure have now.  The website cited above does give a good clear picture of what I am describing.

I'm there now. The station is remarkably different, and it is advised to leave more time to get to one's train is not familiar with new routings.  Gone (for now) are the individual sliding doors for each track along the track side of the headhouse.  Just one larger one remains at Track 1/2 closest to the Food Court.       The rest are blocked and papered over.  Outside, all tracks were shortened and the railbed filled in to create temporary common platform areas during the construction.   Some of the overhead trainshed canopies were removed as part of this construction, necessitating use of an umbrella to get from my track to the building.

As i alluded to the bad weather, there seem to be more homeless people inside the station taking over the benches, particularly in what are now darker corners where the sliding doors used to be for the higher number tracks.
