Ft. Lauderdale streetcar project rides a Wave

Strong top-level civic and political support is driving this south Florida city’s streetcar project, and it just took another major step forward when, on March 12th, Broward County — in a unanimous vote of the county commission — gave final approval for a 2.7-mile, $147 million central area streetcar project, locally branded The Wave.

Wave streetcar plans will eliminate some left turns along South Andrews Avenue
Streetcar stops for the Wave will be built down the middle of South Andrews Avenue when construction begins on the light rail transit system later this year.

Support for The Wave streetcar crumbling

SNIP:

But with construction expected by year’s end, momentum against The Wave is suddenly growing. Residents are circulating a petition against The Wave, saying it’s outdated technology, unnecessary in an Uber era, and not worth the expense.

Uber may work OK in some places, but in my experience, I would trust transit.  The three times I have used Uber, one was fine, the other two were awful.  I got Chatty Cathy telling me her life story while driving with one hand and searching Google Maps with the other.  Another time, the driver couldn't speak English and hadn't a clue where the Philadelphia Art Museum was.    Sloan

Broward keeps future Fort Lauderdale streetcars on track

Video of virtual ride and article are here:

http://www.sun-senti...0613-story.html

The reporter states that the trolley will traverse Third Avenue bridge without rails and wires.  Batteries will provide enough juice to get the streetcar over the bridge, but how does the trolley rumble along the bridge without rails?

Also, traffic will be a problem.  The streetcar will need traffic signal pre-emption in order to move on schedule.  Did you see one goofy auto driver operate in the wrong lane?  Tougher enforcement will be necessary once The Wave goes into operation.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 9/15/17:

Fort Lauderdale's Wave streetcars will cost $5 million each

There’s going to be a new vehicle turning heads in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

It’s called the Siemens S70, a sleek, $5 million streetcar that runs on electricity, has large windows for passengers to view the city and has plenty of room inside for bikes and wheelchairs.

Fort Lauderdale's Wave streetcar construction costs explode

A tsunami hit Fort Lauderdale’s Wave streetcar plans Monday when bids to design and build the downtown line came in $74 million to $104 million higher than advertised, which could send the project’s budget off its tracks.
