Wave goodbye? Fort Lauderdale may cancel its streetcar project

After Fort Lauderdale’s newly elected mayor and city commissioners officially take office on Tuesday, they may end the city’s controversial effort to develop a streetcar system called the Wave.

The operative verb here is "may." Politicians pledge but often waffle when getting into office.  So, we shall see what we shall see. ^_^  Sloan

Wave streetcar: What would it mean for us?

Critics of the Wave say the $195 million electric streetcar system will only grow in cost, will have no advantage over buses, and will contribute to traffic congestion instead of relieving it, among other things.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Fort Lauderdale City Commission voted Tuesday night to end its support for the Wave streetcar project, Local 10 ABC News reported.

The Wave Streetcar is a 2.8-mile hybrid, fixed-rail system that would run in existing street lanes with other vehicles.

Opponents have called the $195 million project, which has been slated for more than a decade, outdated and a "train to nowhere,"according to the report.

Broward County Commissioners must know what is going on outside the windows of their offices in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

They must know that voters in the past election demanded a change in City Hall.

This is the latest.
