Funding added for crude by rail safety

WASHINGTON – The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved a bill that provides $246 million to improve crude oil transportation safety.

Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., who serves on the committee, said in a statement Wednesday that the funding will help improve the safety of transporting crude oil by rail.

The bill includes $246 million for the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, a $120 million increase from the past fiscal year, to address recent accidents involving oil trains.

“This legislation provides critical funding that will enhance oil pipeline and rail shipment safety, which will help prevent accidents in the first place and mitigate their impacts if they do occur,” Hoeven said.
