Looks like Riverside may be the next city to study streetcars in California.

railway age

I was wondering, 12 miles, a little long for a streetcar, wouldn't that be more of a light rail line, or perhaps a hybrid option. Then again, rail modes are evolving so fast, the distinctions between them are getting blurred. Just like Siemens adapting the S70 for streetcar use.

Agreed this is a rather long distance for a streetcar route, although it doesn't sound like the entire route is in an urban area, so there might be places where some speed could be attained between stops. Either way it does seem better suited to light rail. I trust the article's author knows what he's talking about, as he is a former President of New Jersey ARP.

A little more to the story, looks like from the local paper, it is a 12 mile corridor proposal. I am
M just used to most modern streetcar proposals being of short lengths. I have often suggested a few routes here that streetcars with a higher capacity could work as feeders for LINK, and the corridors are longer than 2-3 miles.

Riverside, CA Press-Enterprise, 9/17/14:

City seeks input on streetcar plan

Riverside will hold a public workshop Wednesday, Sept. 24, to hear people’s ideas and opinions that will help guide the study of a proposed streetcar line.

This is the story.

RIVERSIDE: Possible streetcar routes revealed

Building a streetcar line in Riverside could cost more than $500 million, but officials say it also could generate at least 15,000 new jobs and spur construction of 1 million square feet of commercial buildings and more than 1,000 housing units.

RIVERSIDE: Streetcar plan faces financial hurdle

Many questions surround the nearly $616 million streetcar line proposed in Riverside.

Can people be convinced to ride it? Will federal money be available to build it?

One thing is certain, though.

The city will continue to grow, and more people will mean more cars and more traffic congestion.

RIVERSIDE: Leaders hope streetcar will be ticket to thriving downtown

Business districts bustling with new restaurants, shops and apartments. Young adults meeting friends for dinner, drinks or a live show in a downtown that doesn’t die at 5 p.m.

And all of it anchored by a quiet, smooth-running streetcar connecting Riverside’s college and three universities with points of interest in between.

Besides being a useful way to get around Riverside, it can also serve as a feeder/circulator meeting Metrolink trains on the 91, Inland Empire-Orange County, and Riverside Lines, the future Perris Valley extension, and even Amtrak's Southwest Chief.
