2 DEAD IN AMTRAK TRAIN ACCIDENT IN CHESTER; SERVICE SUSPENDED BETWEEN PHILADELPHIA AND NEW YORK CITY, WILMINGTON


CHESTER, Pa. (WPVI) -- Two people are confirmed dead after an accident involving an Amtrak train in Chester, Delaware County.
Amtrak has suspended all service on the Northeast Corridor. Service is suspended between Philadelphia and both New York City and Wilmington.
The accident was reported at 7:53 a.m. Sunday near Booth Street on the Palmetto Train 89.

The train was operating from New York to Savannah.  Amtrak officials say the train struck a backhoe that was on the tracks.  The impact derailed the lead engine of the train.

So the incident happened between Philadelphia and Wilmington. Why can't Keystone service continue between New York and Philly, as well as limited Regional service between the two? Are they out looking for more stray backhoes?

2 Workers Die as Amtrak Train Strikes Backhoe Causing Fireball


An Amtrak train struck a piece of construction equipment just south of Philadelphia Sunday morning, leaving two Amtrak employees dead and nearly three dozen passengers hurt.

2 reported dead after Amtrak train derails in Chester

 

Two died and 35 were injured Sunday when an Amtrak train struck a maintenance vehicle on the Northeast Corridor tracks in Chester, rail officials said.

All Amtrak service is suspended between Wilmington, Del., and Philadelphia. This morning, Amtrak Train 89, operating from New York City to Savannah, Ga., struck a backhoe that was on the tracks and partially derailed the lead engine south of Philadelphia. There were approximately 341 passengers and 7 crew members on board. Initial reports are that approximately 31 passengers are being transported to area hospitals, none with life-threatening injuries. Local emergency responders are on the scene and an investigation is ongoing.

Northeast Corridor service between Wilmington, Del., and Philadelphia is suspended until early this afternoon. Keystone Service between New York City and Harrisburg, Pa., is not affected.

Individuals with questions about their friends and family on Train 89 should call Amtrak’s Emergency Hotline at 800-523-9101.

My condolences go out to the deceased. How does a crew leave equipment on/near the track? Was it Amtrak or SEPTA crew?

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) -- An Amtrak train struck a piece of construction equipment just south of Philadelphia on Sunday causing a derailment, killing two Amtrak workers and sending more than 30 passengers to hospitals, authorities said.

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told reporters at a New York news conference on another subject Sunday that he was told by Amtrak board chairman Anthony Coscia that the workers killed were the backhoe operator and a supervisor, both Amtrak employees. He said debris from the crash flew into the first two cars, causing the injuries to passengers.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) -- The Latest on an Amtrak derailment in Chester, Pennsylvania. (all times local):

 

5:45 p.m.

 

Federal investigators will be examining data and video from an Amtrak train that derailed after hitting a piece of heavy equipment on the tracks near Philadelphia, killing two Amtrak workers and sending more than 30 passengers to hospitals.

 

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Ryan Frigo said Sunday evening that the data recorder and forward-facing and inward-facing video from the locomotive have been recovered.  .  .  .
