Second Avenue Sagas, 1/30/13:

Calls grow to reopen the old South Ferry loop

With around 15,000 Staten Islanders a day faced with a longer walk and inconvenient journeys, Staten Island officials and MTA Board representatives have called upon the agency to reopen the old five-car loop station at least on a temporary basis. The station has not been open for four years, though, and the MTA has resisted calls to reopen it.

Second Avenue Sagas, 2/6/13:

Rumor: Transit crews surveying the old South Ferry

Despite our dalliances with the question, the MTA has spent the better part of the last few months vowing to rebuild the new South Ferry terminal despite the damage is sustained during Sandy. With aid money flowing and Staten Island officials griping, the MTA has vowed to speed up the job, but how?

NY MTA Might Re-Open The Old South Ferry Station, Just Don’t Ask When

The NY Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it’ll take two to three years and $600 million dollars to completely repair the South Ferry subway station, shuttered since storm Sandy. Queens NYC, 2/25/13:

The A train to the Rockaways should be back in service by June

The Times Ledger reports that the damaged length of the A train in the Rockaways should be fixed, up and running by June. This is according to MTA President Thomas Prendergast. We like hearing about progress in the Rockaways, and are hopeful that the restoration of service will be on time.

Transportation Nation, 3/11/13:

AUDIO: With the A Train Gone, Traveling to the Rockaways Becomes Much Harder

Before Sandy, every A train trip between the Rockaway peninsula and the rest of New York City began and ended with a crossing of Jamaica Bay. The train moved along a piece of land so thin that, from inside the train, it appears to skim atop the water. But for months, that 3.6 mile railroad bridge has been out, doubling commutes for Rockaways residents and further adding to the sense of deprivation brought on by Sandy.

First photos: 'Old' South Ferry subway station primed for re-opening next week

Take a look at your "new" subway station, Staten Island. Well, it's as "new" as you can get for a 108-year-old stop located on an awkward hairpin curve that hasn't seen any traffic in four years.

ABC-7 story, including video of the news item regarding getting the OLD South Ferry 1 station ready to go back into service.

If the footage used is correct, then they found a way to maintain the connection between the South Ferry 1 train and Whitehall Street R train, something the old South Ferry station didn't have before but had been incorporated into the new station that was only open for three years. I say that because they show some signs that indicate a connection to the R.
