T temporarily shut down, delays expected after rail cars derail in Castle Shannon

 

Two coupled rail cars derailed Monday afternoon on Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s T system, resulting in no injuries but hour-long delays across the service.

 

PRT said in a tweet that the cars derailed around 4 p.m. while traveling inbound on the outbound tracks along the Red Line at Willow Station in Castle Shannon.

 

Around 15 people were onboard. No injuries were reported.

Riders should expect major delays after 2 ‘T’ cars derail in Castle Shannon, PRT says

 

PITTSBURGH — Two “T” cars derailed in Castle Shannon Monday afternoon, shutting down the system completely, Pittsburgh Regional Transit said.

 

Fifteen people were on board when the cars derailed.

 

PRT announced the stoppage at 4:10 p.m. Monday. Just before 5 p.m., they announced service was restored.

It may be important to put this derailment into perspective. Rail cars derail pretty frequently, most of the time without incident of injury. All a derailment means is that the car is off the tracks.

 

Say What?    Pretty frequently?   That should ease the minds of their frequent passengers.    And as we have seen in the past, a derailment can be a lot worse than just "off the tracks" especially if the train does not remain upright.   There were serious injuries to passengers in two LRT derailments in the Denver/Aurora area which were coincidentally on sharp turns.
