Carruthers: Monorail could reduce road traffic

Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers' suggestion to bring a monorail train to the Florida Keys may seem like science fiction, but the county does need a shot in the arm when it comes to public transit, she said.

Carruthers contends the county needs to do more to reduce the amount of traffic on the roads and improve the county's woefully inadequate public transportation system, she said.

Monorail would certainly make sense as its small footprint would not greatly impact the Keys' ecology. Plus the mode itself would become a major tourist attraction. Because of salt sea air, electricity would not be a good power source.  Natural gas would be better..
