Light-rail mechanics: Without more people, we can't provide safe, reliable service

The opening of the Lynx Blue Line Extension has overwhelmed the mechanics who keep light-rail vehicles running, one transit employee recently told City Council.

It seems strange that CATS underestimated the number of mechanics needed to keep the system running.  I think more probable is that the existing staff doesn't have enough time to do their work given the increased service levels that came into play with the extension.  So time is the enemy, but the way of taming it may be new hires to do the work when they can ..... or to reallocate resources to other times of day when service is less frequent.   Certain occupations require training, and this is sure one of them.  They may need to look outside of Charlotte to attract the talent they need.
