Canceled LIRR trains, packed subway platforms due to power problems

 

Power problems created a hellish morning commute after trains in and out of Penn Station were canceled and widespread delays continued into the afternoon.

An Explanation and an Apology for the Events of September 2, 2015

 

On Wednesday morning, September 2 at about 4:45 AM, a power outage that affected the MTA Long Island Rail Road's signal system outside the East River Tunnels in Queens resulted in a service disruption for rush hour customers. Because the power outage occurred intermittently at first, the magnitude of its impact was not immediately apparent. To compound matters, redundant power sources for our signal system did not kick in as expected and before the morning was over, many LIRR trains were significantly delayed, while others were cancelled or diverted to Brooklyn.
