I have reservations for an "Amtrak Adventure" which will take me through NOL on September 28. Amtrak sez the route is unavailable "until further notice". Realizing there is nothing comparable to the NOL situation, is there any hope the Sunset will be back in service by the end of the month? I understand trains are being used to assist in evacuation efforts, so maybe it is a possibility. I hate to reroute unless absolutely necessary. ANY help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Marga78,
The Mayor of New Orleans has stated that there won't be any commerce in New Orleans for at least several months. It will take that long for authorities to figure out how to plug the breach in the levee, and then pump out the city. New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, the station that serves Amtrak and Greyhound, is said to have fared rather well from the flooding since it sits on slightly higher ground. But many approaches to it are blocked by high water and debris from the storm. Even if the tracks are cleared, the city may not accept passenger trains for some time since there is no reason for anyone to be there.
Amtrak has been lenient in making such changes without penalty since they will be unable to operate through the region for some time. It at all possible, I would suggest rerouting with the TEXAS EAGLE through cars, which are still operating on the truncated SUNSET LIMITED west of San Antonio.
