Tourist Railroads & Railway Museums, 9/27:

Big Naugatuck track project

By Howard Pincus, Railroad Museum of New England

Railroad Museum of New England’s railroad operating subsidiary is Naugatuck Railroad (NAUG).  NAUG holds the railroad lease from Connecticut Dept. of Transportation (CDOT).  The ex-New Haven line is 19.6 miles from Highland Junction in Waterbury, to Torrington (both in Connecticut). NAUG is a common-carrier, general-system railroad; it has had sporadic revenue freight service during the last 18 years.  It interchanges at Highland Junction with Pan Am Southern Railway.

NAUG was the recipient of a $1,649,000 RFIP (Rail Freight Improvement Program) grant in 2013, for upgrade and improvement of the line. The project is being performed 90% by contractor Rail Works working for NAUG, with the balance being performed by NAUG personnel.  Project administration is being done by NAUG, which also handled material procurement directly.
