Claremont residents to trains: Stop blowing your horns (Video)

CLAREMONT >> Jackie Jeffress has lived near the railroad tracks for 18 years and never had to worry about the trains once her hearing aids were out.

But in recent months, even without her hearing aids, Jeffress has been unable to sleep soundly.

Colin Robins, who for four years has resided near First Street and Mills Avenue, began to notice a disruption in his sleep — typically starting at 4:30 a.m., when the volume of the train noise increases dramatically.

On Tuesday night, the City Council took a step in what may be a lengthy endeavor to address the racket and the possibility of designating Claremont a quiet zone.

Letter to the Editor

Railroad train horns promote public safety

Re “Claremont residents to trains: Stop blowing your horns” (July 13):

Who’s paying for the studies on the noise, Claremont or Metrolink? Studies have already been done and are posted on the Federal Railroad Administration website. The site also shows all the sound testing and results. And also shows the studies that indicate when horns were used, accidents dwindled, and when horns stopped, the accidents increased. Once the horns were reactivated, the accidents declined once again.

SNIP

From a law enforcement background of 30 years, we have found drivers don’t pay any attention to horns, red flashing lights or crossing guard arms and neither do pedestrians. For those that do, thank you, you’re a life saved.
