The Boston Globe, 2/21/18:

Red Line car derailed, causing smoke and broken windows

At least three windows on a Red Line subway car shattered, and plumes of smoke were sent into Andrew Station after a train motor failed Wednesday morning, leading to the closure of the station and the deployment of shuttle buses between Dorchester and South Boston, T officials said.

The buses were still ferrying passengers between JFK/UMass Station and Broadway Station late Wednesday afternoon.

WCVB-TV Boston, MA 2/21/18:

300 feet of third rail damaged after Red Line derailment

MBTA officials originally called incident a 'motor issue'

BOSTON — Service on the MBTA Red Line remains suspended Wednesday afternoon, hours after an incident that resulted in heavy smoke and broken windows during the morning commute.

Officials with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority originally said the incident was due to a motor failure, but on Wednesday afternoon, they said it was a track issue "that led to the derailment of the last car of the six-car train."

The car "re-railed itself" as it entered Andrew Station.

MBTA news release:

MBTA Red Line Service Remains Suspended Between JFK and Broadway Because of Track Issue

Posted on February 21, 2018

BOSTON—Today, at approximately 9:20 AM, a northbound Red Line train approaching Andrew Station experienced an issue that led to the derailment of the last car of the 6-car train.

During the incident, the last car of the train rerailed itself as it entered Andrew Station before stopping. Once stopped at Andrew, customers safely unloaded from the train; the train was immediately taken out of service and exited the station under its own power.

MBTA personnel are investigating all aspects of this occurrence, which includes a thorough inspection of the track, third rail, and the entire train’s equipment and components involved. An initial assessment found that approximately 300 feet of third rail was damaged as a result of this incident. When the train arrived at Andrew Station, the train operator reported an indication of a motor failure in the last car of the 6-car train.

"This is a serious incident, and we want our customers to know that our top priority is to operate a safe system for our customers," said T General Manager Luis Manuel Ramírez. "While we realize this is a significant inconvenience to our customers, the Red Line will remain closed between Broadway and JFK until it is safe to resume service. Until then, our team continues to assess the damage, and make necessary repairs, while working to identify the root cause."

The MBTA is working to resume regular Red Line service as quickly and safely as possible and apologizes to its customers for this service disruption.

In the meantime, bus shuttle service operating in both directions, stopping at Broadway, Andrew, and JFK/UMass will continue as long as necessary, though MBTA customers may consider an alternate transit mode if possible to avoid crowding and delays.

Because of this disruption in service, MBTA customers are encouraged to use the following Middleborough/Lakeville, Kingston/Plymouth, and Greenbush MBTA Commuter Rail train option, which will accommodate MBTA Red Line passengers as needed:

  • All inbound and outbound Kingston and Middleborough Line trains will stop at JFK/UMass, Quincy Center, and Braintree.
  • All inbound and outbound Greenbush Line trains will stop at JFK/UMass and Quincy Center. Note: Greenbush line trains will not stop at Braintree, as it is on a different route.

For the most current service information, please continue to visit mbta.com, subscribe to T-Alerts, and follow @MBTA on Twitter.

MassLive.com, 12/21/18:

On an unseasonably warm day in Boston, the MBTA's Red Line underwent a partial meltdown

The visuals probably weren't what MBTA managers are looking for as they seek to steer paying customers towards taking public transit instead of popular ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft.

The scenes from outside South Boston's Broadway Station: Hordes of people spilling out from a partly crippled transportation system and onto the street to wait for shuttle buses.

The scenes from inside Andrew Station hours earlier: Smoke pouring out of a train, riders posting to social networking sites like Twitter and expressing alarm over shattered train car windows after a derailment.

NECN News, 2/21/18 10:00 pm EST:

Regular Service Resumes Following Red Line Derailment

Regular service has resumed after a derailment led to smoky conditions and confusion Wednesday morning on the MBTA's Red Line.

The last car of a six-car train derailed as it entered Andrew Station around 9:20 a.m., then "re-railed itself" before it stopped, according to MBTA spokesperson Joe Pesaturo.

Initially, the MBTA said it was a track problem, but then said it was a motor failure that led to the issue. In a press release Wednesday afternoon, the MBTA called the incident a derailment. Pesaturo later clarified all three things happened Wednesday morning.
