IDOT plans more upgrades as part of high-speed rail prep

ALTON -- The Illinois Department of Transportation plans to carry out crossings upgrades this year as it prepares to provide high-speed rail passenger service between Chicago and St. Louis by 2017.

About 20 crossing safety upgrades between East St. Louis and Carlinville are planned, said Scott Speegle, Passenger Rail Marketing manager for IDOT at an high-speed rail open house on Thursday.

The Herald-News, Joliet, IL 7/6:

Will County projects in the works for high-speed rail along Chicago-St. Louis line

State predicting 110 mph trains in service by end of 2017

The railroad crossing work that started recently in Braidwood is a reminder that high-speed rail is on its way.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has said high-speed rail work from Chicago to St. Louis should be finished by the end of 2017, taking one hour off the train ride that now takes about 5 hours and 15 minutes.

Projects along the way range from railroad crossing improvements, such as those in Braidwood, to the $50 million multimodal facility being built in Joliet.

The State Journal-Register, Springfield, IL 7/16/16:

Crossing technology a sign of faster trains to come

Safety regulators have begun warning motorists of faster trains along a high-speed rail corridor in Illinois months before Amtrak service at up to 110 mph is scheduled to begin.

New crossing gates, signals that communicate with train crews, vehicle sensors in pavement and signs warning of train speeds "in excess of 80 mph" are basic to high-speed rail construction nearing an end between St. Louis and Chicago. The improvements also are a regulatory heads-up to motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists conditioned by years of trains at much slower speeds, said Mike Stead, rail safety program administrator for the Illinois Commerce Commission.

"The time and distance relative to conventional-speed trains and higher-speed trains is significant," Stead said.

State transportation officials have set a goal of Amtrak speeds up to 110 mph on much of the Chicago-St. Louis corridor in 2017.
