Only 10 days remain until Garden State RailFest 2008!

We currently have 14 people on the participant list. It looks like we will have 10 on Friday, and all 14 on Saturday, unless things change.

Of the ten people on Friday, we still have some people taking Amtrak from NWK to PHL, while others are taking NJT's NEC Line, and then either SEPTA R7 or the RiverLINE from Trenton Transit Center (formerly Trenton). The NJT NEC option will, of course, allow you to view the progress on construction at this facility, whose headhouses are now open but not fully occupied.

The offspring who has served as my backup set of eyes, ears, and brains since I entered my quadragenerian years and subsequently saw some slow deterioration of each, will not be along on this fest. So you won't hear "Daddy your phone is ringing" on this trip. Bear with me and we'll get through it.

Lunch in Atlantic City will be wherever you choose. I believe some are going to go for casino hotel buffets. There is also "The Walk", a fairly new area of development of mostly outlet stores just 2 blocks from the train station/convention center which has quite a few of the expected fast food or sit-down places. There's also the Boardwalk itself.

NJT rail fare entitles you to use the complimentary shuttles (may be a bus or a jitney) that run on different routes to the casinos and other downtown destinations. If you are going directly to the Boardwalk or one of the casino hotels, make sure you retain your AC-bound NJT ticket to show on the shuttle vehicle. Train crew should punch it and return it to you. If you're going to "The Walk" for lunch, you won't need the shuttles. It's another several blocks walk towards the ocean to get to the casinos and Boardwalk.

Keep in mind if you want to use a shuttle to return to the station, you need to be prepared to depart half an hour before train time, and know where the shuttle will pick you up at any given location (mostly casino hotels). You also should have your Lindenwold-bound or Philly-bound ticket in hand to show the operator, so don't plan on buying your ticket at the last minute before the train trip.

My list of restaurants in Atlantic City walkable from the rail station is here. By no means is it complete. There are many pizza and fast food type restaurants along Atlantic Avenue and the streets leading to it. Also the many small food stands on the Boardwalk are not included.

Dinner on Saturday, for those who wish to join us and be shuttled by car (about 1.5 miles each way) between the Lindenwold station and the restaurant, will be at Lone Star Steakhouse in Voorhees. The menu is here (.pdf file requires Adobe Reader). I know that some of you are taking earlier NJT trains back from Atlantic City in order to catch other connections home. Please let me know by e-mail whether you are joining us for dinner so that we can give a count to the restaurant and also know how many car trips will be required.

Any further updates will be forthcoming as GSRF gets closer.
